Shelley Long was born on August 23, 1949, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her parents were both teachers. When she was a teenager, she was part of the speaking team at South Side High School. In 1967, she won the National Forensic League’s Original Oratory National Championship. After graduation, Long intended to study theatre at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; however, instead pursued a modeling and acting career.

In the 1970s, Long became a member of Chicago’s Second City comedy company. She also has experience in print advertising and television commercials, as well as creating, scripting, and co-hosting the local Chicago television show “Sorting it Out.”

In addition to her roles on various TV shows throughout the late 1970s and early 1980’s – including “The Love Boat,” “Family,” Trapper John M.D.,” and “M*A*SH” – she also starred in “The Cracker Factory,”  “The Promise of Love,” and “The Princess and the Cabbie.”

The accomplished actress has gone through two divorces. In the 1970s, she married Ken Solomon; however, the marriage did not last long and ended in divorce a few years later.

In 1981, Shelley married Bruce Tyson for a second time after dating him for two years prior. They had met each other for the first time in 1979.

She first started acting in local commercials for a homemaker’s furniture store in Chicago. Later, she became a member of The Second City comedy troupe.

After a few years began working as a writer, producer, and co-host for the TV show Sorting It Out. She eventually won three Regional Emmy Awards for her work on the show. During the 1970s she also appeared in VO5 shampoo print advertisements, and then later in 1978 had a role in the romantic comedy series The Love Boat.

After appearing in the TV movie, The Cracker Factory, Shelley landed roles as a guest star on Trapper John, M.D. and Family. However, she became a well-known figure to audiences worldwide after she took on the role of Diane Chambers in the long-running sitcom, Cheers.

Even though the show didn’t have great ratings, it soon became one of the most popular shows on air. Shelley was a part of the cast for 5 seasons but left because of some controversies in 1987. In Cheers’ documentary, Ted Danson confessed that there was tension between him and Long while they were working together, but not on a personal level.

In 2003, Long revealed several reasons for leaving Cheers during an interview with Graham Norton. The most important reason is her desire to spend more time with her toddler daughter. While appearing on the show, she also had roles in various movies. In 1984, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Leading Actress for Irreconcilable Differences.

Troop Beverly Hills was her first post-Cheers project where she played a portrayal of a housewife that received critical appreciation. Later, she appeared in an ABC miniseries called Voices Within: The Lives of Truddi Chase which is based on real events.

Shelley made a triumphant return to Cheers for its series finale in 1993 and was nominated for another Emmy. After that, she took on several guest-starring roles on various TV shows. More recently, Shelley acted in and produced the feature film Different Flowers in 2016.
