Shelley Long was born on August 23, 1949, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her parents were both teachers. When she was a teenager, she was part of the speaking team at South Side High School. In 1967, she won the National Forensic League’s Original Oratory National Championship. After graduation, Long intended to study theatre at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; however, instead pursued a modeling and acting career.
In the 1970s, Long became a member of Chicago’s Second City comedy company. She also has experience in print advertising and television commercials, as well as creating, scripting, and co-hosting the local Chicago television show “Sorting it Out.”
In addition to her roles on various TV shows throughout the late 1970s and early 1980’s – including “The Love Boat,” “Family,” Trapper John M.D.,” and “M*A*SH” – she also starred in “The Cracker Factory,” “The Promise of Love,” and “The Princess and the Cabbie.”
The accomplished actress has gone through two divorces. In the 1970s, she married Ken Solomon; however, the marriage did not last long and ended in divorce a few years later.
In 1981, Shelley married Bruce Tyson for a second time after dating him for two years prior. They had met each other for the first time in 1979.

She first started acting in local commercials for a homemaker’s furniture store in Chicago. Later, she became a member of The Second City comedy troupe.
