David Foster Early Life:

Jaymes Foster is the only son of Maurice (Morry) Foster and Eleanor May Vantreight, née Foster, who was born on November 1, 1949, in Victoria, British Columbia. His five sisters are Jaymes, Ruth, Jeanie, Maureen, and Marylou. His father worked as a maintenance yard superintendent to help support their large family while his mother stayed at home and cared for them.

In 1963, he enrolled in the University of Washington’s music program. In 1966, he joined Chuck Berry’s band as a backup musician. He spent his youth traveling to England with the Victoria-based group The Strangers before returning to Toronto to work with Ronnie Hawkins.

Foster started as a keyboardist for Skylark, a popular pop group. “Wildflower,” the band’s biggest hit, was number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. Foster moved to Los Angeles after the Skylark group disbanded, and he joined forces with Jay Graydon to form Airplay.

He was part of George Harrison’s Extra Texture album in 1975. He then played on George Harrison’s Thirty-Three & 1/3 the next year, using Fender Rhodes and Clavinet instruments. Foster, along with Ringo Starr and a host of other celebrities, teamed up with Guthrie Thomas on his second album for Capitol Records, Lies and Alibis.

Foster was the most notable collaborator on the track “After The Love Has Gone,” which he co-wrote with Graydon and Bill Champlin and received the 1980 Best R&B Song Grammy award as a studio player and arranger. Four songs were co-written by Foster, including “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” (US No. 1) and “You’re the Inspiration” (US No. 3), which were hits in the US charts.

In 1985, Rolling Stone magazine dubbed Foster as the “master of bombastic pop kitsch” after composing “St. Elmo’s Fire Love Theme” which hit Poppy Charts’ 15th spot. Josh Groban, Michael Bublé, Renee Olstead, and Charice have all had major-label debuts from Foster (2001), (2003), (2004), and (2010), respectively.

On December 15, 2011, he assumed the role of Verve Music Group’s President. Foster has also put out a 2014 album under his 143 records titled My Years Tracks with Bryan Adams.
