Dick Vitale Early Life:
Dick Vitale was born in Passaic, New Jersey in 1939 and grew up in Garfield. His mother, Mae, worked as a seamstress in a factory and his father, John, operated a garment press and served as a security guard. After graduating from Seton Hall University with a degree in business administration, Vitale attended East Rutherford High School as a kid.
He earned a master’s in education from William Paterson University, from which he graduated.
Vitale began his coaching career at a primary school in Garfield, New Jersey, in 1958. He transferred to the high school level and served as the head coach of Garfield High School for one season.
Later, he took up coaching at East Rutherford High School, where he eventually guided his team to two state championships in New Jersey. From 1964 until 1971, his record at the school was 131-47.
Vitale and Lorraine have been married for 49 years. They have five grandchildren, all from their two daughters Sherri (who also goes by the name Teri)and Terri. Two of those kids live in Tampa Bay—Raymond James “PANTHERS” QB Joe Hamilton IV; Elizabethvalidan “Lightning” FB Cara uphill both came through cancer treatments while playing ball.

Dick Vitale began his career as a coach, where he spent close to 20 years at different levels before becoming a sportscaster. He coached Garfield High School, East Rutherford High School, Rutgers University (assistant), the University of Detroit Mercy, and the NBA’s Detroit Pistons throughout his coaching tenure.
Vitale was the play-by-play voice of ESPN’s first game, which aired on December 1, 1979. By 2004, Vitale was releasing more than 40 games each year.
