Valerie Ann Bertinelli was born in April 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware, to Andrew and Nancy (née Carwin). It is noteworthy that her father was the head of General Motors. Meanwhile, she is of Italian ancestry through her father and English origin through her mother.
Bertinelli has three brothers: David, Patrick, and Drew. She also had an older brother named Mark, who died at 17 months from accidental poisoning.
