Valerie Ann Bertinelli was born in April 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware, to Andrew and Nancy (née Carwin). It is noteworthy that her father was the head of General Motors. Meanwhile, she is of Italian ancestry through her father and English origin through her mother.

Bertinelli has three brothers: David, Patrick, and Drew. She also had an older brother named Mark, who died at 17 months from accidental poisoning. The family moved around a lot while Valerie was growing up due to her father’s job. She lived in Delaware, Michigan, Louisiana, and Oklahoma before settling in California. There she attended Granada Hills High School. At school, Bertinelli landed the role of Barbara Cooper Royer on the sitcom One Day at a Time.

Eddie died from cancer in October 2020.

Bertinelli started dating TV executive, Tom Vitale in 2004. After announcing their engagement in May 2010, the pair tied the knot on January 1, 2011. Her ex-husband, Eddie, and son, Wolfgang also attended her wedding. On November 24, 2021, she filed for legal separation from Tom Vitale citing irreconcilable differences.
